Office Overhaul: Part One

Where It Started: Two Desks

My very first blog post was about my home office. While I was writing Deceived, I realized my workspace had become a jumble of writing projects and personal business. When I sat down to write, I found myself paying bills and couldn’t concentrate on creative writing.

My solution was two desks, side by side: one for writing, the other for life. I used two chairs, so the act of sitting told me which job I was there to do.

That system worked for years. Over time, I learned to deviate from the two-desk setup, and I began writing in other places too.

The Bad News: Two Desks Became Three

Somewhere along the way, two desks became three. Today, in my small office, I have three cluttered desks, a cabinet that is overflowing, a reading nook, and a closet filled with so many things I’ve lost track of what’s in there.

Back in 2014, I wrote that clutter becomes distraction. My office has proved me right. Something drastic needs to be done!

The Good News: I Can’t Procrastinate

The truth is I’ve been delaying this project ever since last November, when Desperate Whispers and Silent Screams were published. Now, I don’t have time to procrastinate because Bob and I have decided to move from the suburbs to the Arts District in downtown New Orleans.

I’ve known for a while that this would be happening, but moving day is fast approaching. I’m moving from a room with a door that I can close to an open-air writing and plotting area, a different open-air area for a reading nook, and cabinets for storage that are in a separate room.

Here are the new spaces:

I might be overly optimistic, but I’m really excited about these new spaces and somehow know I will be productive there. I haven’t decided what will happen to most of the things I’ve accumulated over the years, but I’m determined to keep my spaces uncluttered.
